Bangalore is experiencing a tragedy of sorts. The famed Garden City's green cover will now only be mentioned in history books, in photographs, and in our memories.
Every denizen needs mass urban transport, but it comes at the cost of felling century old trees. Seeing the trees being felled on Cubbon Road is the worse nightmare come true. The authorities should make it a law to plant a minimum of 2 saplings for every tree being felled. The saplings should be from the same family of the tree being felled.
There have been promises of the green cover being restored, but the Outer Ring Road, which is devoid of any vegetation, is an example of unkept promises.
Town planners need to wake up from their deep slumber, environmental activists should resist such rapid and sometimes unnecessary urbanization, and speakers on global warming should step out of their air-conditioned auditoriums and walk the talk.
